Welcome

We are the first specialist Russian Language Saturday School for bilingual Russian-English children in the UK. On completion of their education these young people will possess extremely valuable bilingual skills. The school offers an exceptionally high standard of tuition. Russian Language, Literature and History are taught to GCSE and A-Level, but pupils attain proficiency well above those levels, up to native-speaker standard (possibly equivalent to a Higher Degree in some aspects.)

The School was founded in January 1998. It is

the first and so far the only school in the country of its kind – a School as well as a Cultural Centre. 20 highly experienced native Russian teachers (at least three with a Dr. degree) work with pupils in small groups. Teachers use an individual approach to the children. Progress of each pupil is monitored. We hold termly consultations with parents and provide end-of-year school reports. All classrooms are very well equipped. The School is a member of the International Association of Russian Schools and Cultural Societies – “Eurolog”, and holds a Cup and a Diploma from the Department for Education of the Russian Federation “Best Russian School Abroad-2005″

Children’s Saturday Principal Course (9 Years):

Russian Language, Literature And History, Russian Art And Culture

Age 3-17. 2 hours per week plus weekly homework assignments. We offer Russian Grammar/Text books, History books, and Literature books with cassettes to take home for completing the homework assignments. (This course has been in place for over five years.)
Children born in this country either to Russian-speaking or mixed families learn the language from scratch at the school with help from their Russian-speaking parents at home. They also learn Russian Literature, History and Culture, alongside immigrant children, of a similar age, from a Russian-speaking country, whose spoken Russian has already been established. The latter group develop their Russian communication skills further, improve other aspects of the language, e.g. grammar and style, and continue their studies of Russian literature, art and history.

Additional Children’s Saturday Courses

Mathematics (including 11+ Mathematics) - Small group tuition with an individual approach to every child, to an advanced curriculum and based on the traditional Russian method; mathematical rules or aspects are thoroughly explained and practised before moving on to the next.
All the children attending classes in mathematics show great improvements and attain better results in mathematics tests at their English schools, and many have been offered places in leading schools in London.

EDEXCEL CERTIFIED EXAMINATION CENTRE

GCSE Russian Plus – Teaching to a deeper and broader level than usual GCSE (the curriculum includes Russian Language, Literature, and History course for bilingual children).
Highest exam results have been attained by 100% of our pupils in the past years (A*). 2 students were in the top ten in the country in 2008.

A-level Russian Plus – Teaching to a higher level than the usual A-level curriculum: deeper and broader (the curriculum includes Russian Language, Literature, and History course for bilingual children)
We achieve the highest examination results (A) for all our students. 2 students were in the top ten in the country in 2008.

Children’s Clubs

Music and Singing Club - Children play musical instruments, sing, stage little musicals, etc. This club is a very important addition to a language school. Singing helps to develop audio and pronunciation skills.

Piano and guitar individual tuition.

Latin-American Dance.

Football Club is sponsored by the Football Association.

Ballet Club – Our teachers are of the highest standard – ex-Kirov Ballet dancers. The students perform on stage at important events in London.

Art Club - Children develop their creative talents and learn various art skills, learn about art in general, including Russian art. Exhibitions of Children’s Art are regularly organised.

Staging school plays -This club is a very important addition to a language school. Drama helps to develop children’s confidence in the language, improve presentation and conversation skills, as well as provides an opportunity to use the language emotionally and creatively.

School’s Activities

These are a very important part of school life. In order to boost children’s motivation and broaden

their perspectives, the School organises various extra-curricular activities:

Festivals, Competitions, Celebrations and Parties - Harvest Festival, Mother’s Day, Christmas and New Year, Alexander Pushkin’s Anniversary, etc. – Organised regularly during the year.

Open School Concerts and Plays – Performed by the children 2-3 times a year.

Concerts and Shows at the School – Performed by visiting musicians and actors occasionally.

Visits from Russian Children’s Writers - Have been organised twice in the past year.

Exhibitions of Professional Russian Artists - Have been organised twice in the past.

Theatre and Museum Visits - are organised regularly. Examples of visits include The Kirov Ballet performance of Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet Ballet by Prokofiev, Moiseyev Dance Company, Tchaikovsky Ballet by Eifman, Exhibition of Russian Icons, Kenwood House, and the National Gallery.

Participation in International Seminars - the School staff have organised and taken part in many seminars of the European Association of Russian Schools and Societies “Eurolog” in London, Germany, Austria, Moscow. A lot of useful contacts have been established through the Association. Exchange of information and teaching methods.

Cultural Exchange Trips -Two visits have already arranged from a Fashion theatre and a Dance club based at the Russian School “Krone” in Dortmund, Germany, and a visit from the Matrioshka Russian Dance school, based in Trier, Germany. Visiting children/ young people take part in school concerts and join in lessons at the school, where they establish contacts, exchange experiences with our children, etc.

International Summer Camp for Russian-speaking Children - the project has been running for 10 years.
Organised by the International Association of Russian Schools and Cultural Societies “Eurolog”.
Apart from the usual health benefits for the children, who go swimming, horse-riding, walking in the woods, socialise, practise International Evenings, where the children learn even more about one another’s countries from videos, presentations and posters. Children from different countries share the same rooms. They mix and mingle, constantly learning about each other.
The camp also provides a perfect opportunity for Russian-speaking children to recognise and use Russian as one of the main languages of communication. The children often do not feel the need to communicate in Russian in their countries of residence, as they can communicate in the language of the country (e.g. German, if they live in Germany; English, if they live in England, etc). In the camp, however, they need to speak Russian as well as other languages to be able to understand each other. The camp is highly valued by the children and the parents.

Adults Courses And Clubs

Russian Conversation, GCSE, A-level EDEXCEL Centre - Small groups and individual tuition.
2 hours per week plus weekly homework assignments.
